I trulli

I trulli

Those Trulli, of which whose origins have been lost in time, have always been utilised as temporary refuges for shepherds or adapted by farm workers into dwellings. They are totally unique with their circular base, thick walls and small windows. The external walls are whitened with quicklime which reflects the abundant midday light making them appear a flood of brillant white.

Distinctive is its conical roof, harmonious in its perfect arangement of overlapping stones known as Chiancarelle. On the top stands out the characteristic decorative pinnacles, otherwise known as the chiave del trullo (the key of the trullo). Legend says that removing it will cause the structure to collapse, in reality they were sculptured by the Master trullaro to show affiliation to a particular family.

Looking skywards one pauses to decipher the strange symbols drawn in quicklime on the "Chiancarelle" of the trulli. Lots of them can be counted, all different from one another, leading back to Jewish, Christian of even primitive cults. Handed down Through generations, they are intended to keep away the "evil eye", a testimony of faith or just as a message of goodwill.
