The caves

The caves

Tourists, schoolchildren, enthusiasts and specialists come from every where to plunge themselves into an unforgettable visit to the unique underground limestone caves of Castellana since their discovery in 1938 by the scholars Franco Anelli and Vito Matarrese.

Majestic in their beauty, they extend underground for a lenght of three kilometers, reachng depths of 70 meters below ground level.

Two different routes each of different lengths lead to the discovery of elaborate lime stone formations, a jewel of alabaster guarded in the dark for millenia. By their names alone they announce a series of adventures for all to admire: Grotta Grave (the deep cave), Grotta nera (the black cave), the large cave of the Civetta, the corridor of the Snake, the cave of the Precipice and the Small Paradise.

If you have already been impressed by what you have seen then prepare to be dumbfounded when you enter the white grotto, considered to be the most beautiful in the world and the luminous and shining Cave of the Duomo, so called for its particular form of stalagmites, which are reminiscent of the spires og the Cathedral of Milan.

A complex karstic formation that offers the tourist beautiful works of art, a thousand stalactites and stalagmites in forms of flourescent alabaster.
